The second edition of LaingBuisson’s study of the pathology laboratory services markets in the UK. It includes information on NHS provision, private purchase, corporate pathology, provision of pathology, opportunities in NHS pathology, and profiles of non-NHS laboratories.
The pathology laboratory market moved on considerably in the five years since LaingBuisson published its first market study, but the greatest changes are only now about to happen. The most marked developments so far have been among the private operators, which have seen a reshaping of provision as laboratories have opened, closed and merged, preparing the sector to meet the challenges and opportunities awaiting it.
It is the radical changes in NHS pathology that will offer the most exciting opportunities in the future. These will be driven by the shortage of pathologists, difficulties in recruiting laboratory staff, the condition of many NHS laboratories, the need to expand the range of tests without a corresponding increase in budgets, and the development of near-patient testing. Some of these issues will be resolved by internal consolidation of NHS provision, but there will be many opportunities for existing UK private sector operators, overseas laboratory operators or other pathology-related businesses to play a role in the reprovisioning
